Title Trip Pilot - Warrior & Gulf Navigation Job Description The Trip Pilot position of Warrior & Gulf Navigation LLC of Transtar, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of U. S. Steel, is responsible for the navigation of towboats used in the water transportation of raw materials by barge. Job Responsibilities: Receive orders from and communicate with the Captain. Perform periodic inspections of the towboat engine, towing gear, lifesaving equipment, and hull to ensure the safety of the crew, efficient and safe vessel operations and conformance to regulations. Direct and coordinate activities of crew, such as loading/unloading gear, coupling/uncoupling barges, navigation through locks, and vessel housekeeping duties. Coordinate communication between captain and deckhand during watch (shift) changes to insure smooth operation of vessel and tow. Monitor radar, GPS, and other navigational aids. Determine course and towing speed based on knowledge of local winds, weather conditions, tides, and currents. Test of alarm systems. Supervise deckhands and oversee the training and orientation of new crew members Maintain record of daily activities, vessel movements, and ports of call, including log books, deckhand overtime log, and stores requisitions. Communicates with deckhand via radio communication and hand signals as to vessel position in relation to walls and gates while towboats and barges are moving through locks. Supervise loading of gear necessary for day-to-day operations. Report vessel deficiencies and malfunctions to the Maintenance Department. Requirements: High School Diploma/GED or equivalent. Valid driver's license. U. S. Coast Guard Master of Towing Vessels Upon Inland Waters & Western Rivers is required. 5-years holding a Master of Towing License is required. 5-years as Pilot/Master on the Black River and/or Tenn-Tom Waterway preferred although experience on other waterway systems will be considered. Transportation Workers Identity Card or TWIC. 6 to 8 barges tows experience on Inland. Shift work/towbuilding experience. Highwater experience. Work outside subject to inclement weather day or night. Basic computer operation skills. Ability to follow company policies, safety practices, and USCG regulations.
